Hayashi (2005, p. 363) states that the Śulba Sūtras include the world's earliest known verbal formulation of the Pythagorean Theorem, which was previously understood by the Old Babylonians.
The text describes, "The diagonal rope (akṣṇayā-rajju) of a rectangle (oblong) generates an area that is equal to the areas produced separately by the side (flank) (pārśvamāni) and the width (horizontal) (tiryaṇmānī) ropes."
